hand. Grasp the instrument between your thumb and first two fingers by the end opposite from the working end as shown in figure 4-34 (step A). Hold the working instrument close to the treatment area and parallel to the instrument being used. Extend your little finger to receive the instrument being used by the dentist as shown in figure 4-34 (step B).
The signal stage takes place when the dentist signals for the next instrument by slightly raising the instrument from the tooth. During this stage, the dentist maintains his/her fulcrum (finger rest) and, with a pivotal action, rotates the working hand away from the patient's oral cavity. This positions the used instrument so that vou can grasp it with vour little finger.
